Free MIDI sound files

Arguably the Web's single most popular sound format, the MIDI file is everywhere these days.
A small data file, a MIDI file contains a musical sequence that can drive your sound card or electronic musical instrument if it has General MIDI (GM), General Standard (GS) or Extended General MIDI (XG) compatability. (Virtually all sounds cards do).
If you've ever encountered a Web page that featured background music, odds are you're listening to a MIDI file. The same goes for if you've ever received a "digital postcard."
From classical music to rock 'n' roll to techno: no matter what your musical tastes, you can find your favorite tunes in MIDI format somewhere on the Web if you look hard enough.
If you're going to be downloading MIDI files off the Web, then you'll want to check out our free music software section, which features the Web's best freeware programs for playing your sound files.
Please send us E-mail if you're aware of any such free sound-related resources that we haven't listed below.

There's also a comprehensive selection of MIDI utilities for both Macs and PCs. An interesting section on this site is "The Barn," which offers a live chat room, where you can meet fellow MIDI fans and discuss issues with product specialists and company reps.
  • MIDIWorld International - Here's a huge resource that covers a broad spectrum of free MIDI files from around the world.
